Ripple Affiliate SBI Holdings to Launch Yen Stablecoin This Week

Importance High

SBI Holdings, a Japanese financial giant and affiliate of Ripple, is nearing the launch of its yen-pegged stablecoin, ticker JPYSC, within the current quarter ending this week. The project, developed in collaboration with Startale Group, was announced in February and is awaiting final regulatory clearance from Japanese regulators. If approved, the stablecoin will be issued under the trust-bank framework through Shinsei Trust & Banking, with distribution likely managed by SBI VC Trade, the firm’s crypto exchange arm.

SBI Holdings recently partnered with fintech company Fasset to leverage Fasset’s stablecoin-based remittance services via SBI Remit. Fasset processes up to $32 billion in stablecoin transactions annually, hinting at SBI’s strategy to expand its stablecoin ecosystem. The JPYSC stablecoin is designed under Japanese digital payment rules rather than offshore models, enabling institutional-level settlement, token asset management, and corporate payment activities. This structure aims to overcome barriers of lower-tier payment instruments, making the stablecoin suitable for enterprise use by facilitating larger transactions.

The initiative stems from a late 2023 agreement between SBI, Startale, and Ripple to develop a digital yen that bridges traditional banking and blockchain systems while complying with Japanese standards. SBI Holdings has a strong history with Ripple, having contributed to several XRP Ledger projects via SBI Ripple Asia. The conglomerate also holds investments in R3 and Securitize, and has partnered with Circle to boost USDC distribution in Japan. More recently, SBI collaborated with Chainlink on real-world asset tokenization, proof-of-reserve systems, regulated stablecoins, and cross-chain financial infrastructure.

JPYSC will compete with the existing yen stablecoin JPYC, which launched in 2025 and has a first-mover advantage in the Japanese market.
