White House Crypto Advisor Races To Save Trump From CLARITY Act Ethics Rule

Importance Critical

A senior White House crypto advisor is working to negotiate a deal on the CLARITY Act as Congress debates an ethics provision that could directly impact President Donald Trump’s crypto business interests.

Patrick Witt, the White House’s top crypto policy official, has become a central figure in negotiations over the CLARITY Act, a comprehensive digital asset market structure bill aimed at creating clearer regulations for the crypto industry. The legislation has significant Republican support, but Senate Democrats are pushing for an ethics clause that would prevent federal officials, including the President and members of Congress, from creating, endorsing, or sponsoring crypto assets.

With a July 4 deadline approaching, Witt faces two key objectives: securing Democratic votes for the bill while avoiding language that could threaten Trump’s crypto ventures, including World Liberty Financial and the TRUMP meme coin.

“Cementing America’s innovative dominance is a key priority for President Trump, and the Administration has assembled some of the best and brightest minds to help with this effort,” said White House spokesperson Kush Desai. “That includes Patrick Witt, who has been an immense asset for the White House on the Clarity Act, which continues to be held up by Democrats who are more interested in playing political games than supporting American technology.”

However, some lawmakers question Witt’s authority to finalize a deal. Senator John Kennedy stated, “I don’t think he has any authority to make a deal. I think the only person who can make that deal is President Trump.”

Democrats remain cautious. Senator Adam Schiff noted, “There’s still a big question about whether, even if we got to agreement with Patrick Witt — and we’re still some distance from that — whether that could simply be shot down by the White House.”

Senator Cynthia Lummis described Witt as a crucial link between Capitol Hill and the White House, saying he “stays in constant contact with senior staff at the White House, explaining to them what the sideboards are of the discussions.” She added that while Witt will not have the final say on language, he has room to negotiate within a defined space.

As the July 4 deadline looms, Witt’s efforts highlight the growing urgency to advance the CLARITY Act amid ongoing political tensions.
