Binance Declares It's Not Leaving EU Despite MiCA License Failure

Binance has reiterated its commitment to the European Union market even after failing to secure authorization under the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework. The exchange’s Head of Europe and the UK, Gillian Lynch, dismissed rumors that Binance is leaving Europe, stating, “Binance is not leaving Europe.” Lynch noted that the company is still working to obtain regulatory clearance through other means, adding, “We may just have a different pathway to being authorized.”

Earlier last week, Greece rejected Binance’s MiCA licensing application, marking a setback for the exchange. Lynch confirmed that Binance had filed only one application in Greece and is now looking at other jurisdictions. “If it is not Greece, I’m looking at other alternatives,” she said.

These comments come at a critical time for Binance, as its current authorization agreement in Europe is set to expire soon. The exchange faces a time crunch to obtain a MiCA license; without it, it may have to limit services to users across the bloc.

Binance has been in ongoing discussions with regulators in several European countries, including Ireland, Latvia, and Greece. However, negotiations have reportedly been challenging due to the exchange’s past non-compliance with regulations, its organizational structure, and risk management issues. Lynch acknowledged these concerns but highlighted the investments Binance has made to ensure compliance, noting that the company now has about 1,500 compliance staff worldwide and has strengthened internal controls.

Lynch expressed optimism about Binance’s prospects in the Greek licensing process and confirmed that there are no outstanding issues related to its European application. The exchange continues to work on other license applications to operate under the EU’s new crypto regulation regime. In contrast, Ripple has already secured a preliminary MiCA license in Luxembourg.

Binance’s commitment to the European market remains firm, and it is actively seeking alternative regulatory pathways to secure the necessary authorization.
