Blackrock Says Bitcoin's Role Is Evolving, Calls a 1%-2% Portfolio Allocation Appropriate

Importance Critical

Blackrock, the world’s largest asset manager, told financial advisors on June 23 that a bitcoin allocation of roughly 1% to 2% can serve as a “complementary diversifier” in long-term portfolios, framing the digital asset’s investment role as still evolving.

The firm’s endorsement comes from a multi-billion-dollar entity whose spot bitcoin ETF, IBIT, has become one of the fastest-growing funds in history. Blackrock’s analysis indicates that a 1%-2% weighting, added to a typical mix of stocks and bonds, carries a risk profile similar to holding the “Magnificent Seven” megacap technology stocks. This comparison aims to make bitcoin’s volatility understandable to advisors familiar with concentrated tech exposure.

However, Blackrock cautioned that bitcoin’s high volatility means an outsized allocation could significantly increase overall investment risk, advising most investors to keep positions limited and strategic. The firm’s guidance arrives amid a difficult backdrop for digital assets, with managing director Robbie Mitchnick noting that the AI investment boom is currently drawing capital away from bitcoin, gold, and other alternatives as investors chase exposure to artificial-intelligence infrastructure and chipmakers.

Despite this competition for capital weighing on prices, Blackrock’s Rick Rieder has argued that bitcoin is heading “considerably higher” over the long run, reflecting an internal view that near-term flows and long-term conviction can diverge. The guidance acknowledges bitcoin’s volatility and the pull of the AI trade but still treats a modest allocation as a legitimate diversification tool.

Whether this translates into fresh inflows depends on broader market conditions, with the AI trade still absorbing capital. The test for bitcoin in the second half of the year will be whether institutional adoption deepens even as competing assets command investor attention. Bitcoin is currently trading at $62,618.
