Meta's Arena Prediction Market Could Challenge Polymarket and Kalshi

Meta, led by Mark Zuckerberg, is reportedly building a prediction market app called Arena, positioning itself as a major competitor to established platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi. The development comes as prediction markets experience a surge in popularity, with users forecasting outcomes in elections, sports, and pop culture.

Opening Bell Media CEO Phil Rosen highlighted the rapid growth of the sector, noting that Polymarket and Kalshi have become two of the most popular platforms globally. However, he cautioned that Meta’s entry could reshape the market: “If Meta gets into this arena, I think if they did it the right way, they would destroy PolyMarket and Kalshi. Meta just has the distribution.”

Meta’s ecosystem, including Facebook and Instagram, reaches billions of users, giving Arena a potential built-in audience that would take years for startups to cultivate. Arena is expected to operate independently of Meta’s core apps, but those platforms could funnel traffic to the new service.

Initial reports suggest Arena might use a point-based system rather than real money, though cash-based predictions remain under consideration. This approach could help navigate regulatory scrutiny, as prediction markets face increasing oversight in the U.S. and abroad. Several states have questioned whether certain prediction contracts constitute illegal gambling.

Despite the potential threat, both Polymarket and Kalshi are showing resilience. Kalshi is seeking funding at a $40 billion valuation, while Polymarket is negotiating a $400 million capital raise at a $15 billion valuation. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has also taken legal action against states asserting authority over prediction markets.

Meta’s move into prediction markets could force existing players to adapt, but its regulatory strategy and product design will be crucial in determining whether Arena succeeds or fails.
