American Express Builds a Stablecoin Team With VP Role Paying Up to $282,000
American Express has posted a newly created position for a vice president of stablecoin and blockchain partnerships and strategy, paying a salary range of $176,750 to $282,000 a year. The role sits in the company’s Digital Labs division in New York and is responsible for integrating stablecoins into Amex’s payment rails and forging partnerships with token issuers, networks, and emerging commerce ecosystems.
Amex also listed a companion role for a vice president of onchain products, indicating a broader team build-out focused on blockchain-native capabilities. This move reflects a shift in the payments industry, as rivals Visa and Mastercard have expanded stablecoin settlement pilots, and former Amex and Visa executives have launched their own stablecoin ventures.
CEO Stephen Squeri has discussed stablecoins as an emerging alternative to traditional payment networks, but cautioned that a crypto-linked Amex card remains distant. The new job listings suggest Amex is moving from commentary to internal development.
The timing aligns with the passage of the GENIUS Act, which establishes a federal framework for payment stablecoins, defining them as payment instruments rather than securities. Six federal agencies are finalizing implementing rules by a July 18 deadline, with issuers facing a 120-day compliance period. Analysts expect stablecoins to account for a growing share of dollar payments by the end of the decade, amid a combined market capitalization of $260 billion.
