Supreme Court Blocks Trump From Firing Lisa Cook, Backing Fed Independence

The U.S. Supreme Court has blocked President Donald Trump from firing Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, delivering a significant victory for Federal Reserve independence. The 5-4 ruling issued Thursday rejected the President’s attempt to remove Cook over alleged mortgage fraud, a case that has been in litigation for nearly a year.

Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the majority, emphasized that accepting the administration’s argument would allow the President to remove a Fed board member at any time and for any reason without prior notice or judicial oversight. “That would turn for-cause protection into little more than at-will employment,” Roberts wrote.

He clarified that the ruling does not address whether Cook actually committed wrongdoing but instead focuses on the legal standards for evaluating the President’s removal power. “The ultimate question of whether the President can remove Cook for cause will depend in part on the underlying facts,” Roberts noted.

This decision comes as Trump pushes for lower interest rates but has not yet secured a majority on the Fed Board. The Fed left rates unchanged at its June meeting, with most officials taking a hawkish stance amid rising inflation concerns.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump responded by saying the Court sent the case back on procedural grounds. “We will take appropriate action immediately to make sure that someone who has committed wrongdoing will not be making vital decisions concerning the Welfare of the Unites States of America!” he wrote.

Inflation remains a key concern, with PCE inflation hitting 4.1% – its highest since 2023. Some analysts, including Bank of America, have even predicted a Fed rate hike this year. Polymarket data shows a 53% probability of a rate hike in 2025.

The ruling reinforces the independence of the Federal Reserve, a critical issue for financial markets, including cryptocurrencies, which are sensitive to monetary policy changes.
