Brazil Stablecoin Demand Explodes 158% Year-Over-Year to $2.6 Billion in May

Importance High

New data released by the Central Bank of Brazil reveals that demand for stablecoins has surged dramatically in the country. In May 2026, Brazilians purchased nearly $2.632 billion worth of stablecoins, a 158% increase compared to May 2025, when purchases reached $1.019 billion. Month-over-month, demand remained strong, dropping only 2.8% from April.

The broader digital asset market also saw explosive growth. Through May 2026, nearly $12.138 billion in digital assets have been purchased, representing 72% of the total crypto purchases recorded in all of 2025 ($16.939 billion). Central Bank sources noted that a significant portion of this demand comes from institutions buying crypto abroad to serve Brazilian clients.

Stablecoins have become popular as dollar proxies not only in Brazil but across other Latin American countries, including Venezuela, Bolivia, and Argentina. However, their rising volume has attracted regulatory attention. The Lula administration attempted to impose a financial tax on stablecoin transactions—similar to taxes on traditional flows—but delayed the move as the government focuses on the October general election.

Proposals under discussion include classifying stablecoins as electronic money, a move opposed by Abcripto, the national crypto association. The association argues that such classification would introduce legal problems and curb adoption, similar to effects seen in Europe under comparable legislation. Congress is expected to consider Bill 4308/2024, which would regulate the status of stablecoins, amid an intense debate between regulators and industry advocates.
