Metaplanet Adds 2,823 Bitcoin, But Still Needs 57,000 BTC to Hit 2026 Target
Metaplanet has resumed its Bitcoin accumulation, adding 2,823 BTC during the second quarter of 2025 after a three-month pause. The purchases, part of its ongoing Bitcoin Treasury Operations, cost 35.89 billion yen (approximately $222 million), at an average price of over 12.7 million yen per coin. This brings the company’s total holdings to 43,000 BTC as of June 30, up from 40,177 BTC at the end of March.
The lower average purchase price for the quarter reduced Metaplanet’s overall average acquisition cost from 15.51 million yen to 15.3 million yen per BTC. Across its entire treasury, the company has invested 659 billion yen to acquire 43,000 BTC. During the quarter, Metaplanet generated $10.95 million (1.747 billion yen) in revenue from Bitcoin Income Generation activities. After offsetting that revenue, the effective acquisition cost fell to 34.14 billion yen, or about 12.093 million yen per unit.
Despite this progress, Metaplanet still has a long way to go to meet its long-term target of 100,000 BTC by the end of 2026. It needs to acquire approximately 57,000 more BTC in the remaining months of the year.
The company’s stock, however, has struggled. Shares are down nearly 49% year-to-date, despite the growing Bitcoin treasury.
In addition to its Bitcoin accumulation, Metaplanet announced plans to acquire Japanese securities firm Siiibo Securities for around $13 million. The deal, expected to close in July, will result in the firm being rebranded as Metaplanet Securities. CEO Simon Gerovich described the transaction as the company’s first major acquisition and the first concrete step under Project Nova, a long-term initiative to build a Bitcoin-focused financial ecosystem in Japan.
