Binance Faces EU Regulatory Hurdles While Expanding into Philippines

Importance Critical

The world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, is navigating a mixed regulatory landscape. In Europe, the exchange has withdrawn its application for a Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) license from the Hellenic Capital Market Commission (HCMC) in Greece, leaving it without the necessary approval to operate in the European Union after July 1. Binance has assured local users that their assets remain safe and stated that Europe is an important region, expressing hope to obtain the permit in the coming months. However, some users have reported receiving withdrawal instructions from the company, while others have not been affected.

Adding to its regulatory challenges, a group of 1,700 UK investors has filed a collective lawsuit in London’s High Court against Binance and former CEO Changpeng Zhao. The claimants allege that the exchange offered unregulated products, leading to severe financial losses, and accuse Binance of failing to provide adequate client protection.

Meanwhile, Binance has strengthened its global presence by officially entering the Philippines. Yee He, Binance’s co-founder and chief customer service officer, announced that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of the Philippines has granted final approval to Blockshoals Technologies Inc. to test its financial products and services within the regulatory sandbox. Under the crypto-asset intermediary model, Blockshoals Stratbox will provide Filipino users access to Binance’s offerings through its global CASP partner. Changpeng Zhao welcomed the development, calling it ‘real liquidity for Philippines.’ While some users see this as a win for crypto adoption, others view it as a distraction from the exchange’s EU problems.
