June 2026 Market Recap: Bitcoin Hits 2-Year Low as ETFs Bleed $8.9B
Bitcoin (BTC) ended June at around $58,000, its weakest level in nearly two years, as spot Bitcoin ETFs suffered sustained outflows. According to a Santiment market report, the month saw capital quietly exiting crypto for AI equities, while whales remained cautious.
ETF outflows have been heavy since May 6, with $8.9 billion leaving the funds. June alone saw $4.51 billion in outflows—the worst month since launch—approaching the $10 billion mark. Santiment noted that such selling may reflect capitulation as weaker hands exit after a long decline.
On-chain data revealed a divergence: wallets with less than 0.01 BTC increased holdings in the final two weeks, while addresses holding 10–10,000 BTC reduced exposure, suggesting large investors doubt a bottom has been found.
Additional pressure came from Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) as its preferred stock fell into the $70s, raising concerns about its financial model. Executive chairman Michael Saylor responded with a Digital Credit Capital Framework to improve liquidity and defended Strategy’s recent sale of 32 BTC, noting the firm had bought ~175,000 BTC this year.
Santiment’s report highlighted that AI and semiconductor stocks are competing for capital that previously flowed into crypto. HashKey researcher Tim Sun echoed this, stating that risk appetite remains but is being reallocated; a correction in AI trade could bring capital back to Bitcoin.
Despite the overall weakness, some assets performed well. Hyperliquid’s HYPE token hit new highs on growing derivatives activity. Lighter’s LIT announced tokenomics changes including buybacks and burns. Pump.fun generated substantial revenues and reportedly seeks a chief legal officer amid regulatory preparations. Solana’s meme coin ecosystem saw influencer-backed launches, with The Black Bull (ANSEM) surging nearly 88,000% in seven days.
Bitcoin has since stabilized above $61,000, but Santiment noted that June may be remembered for exposing which narratives still attract capital.
