Kalshi Eyes Derivatives Offering Beyond Crypto, Rivaling Robinhood
The prediction markets platform Kalshi is reportedly seeking regulatory approval to launch perpetual futures tied to real-world assets such as gold, foreign exchange, and energy, marking an expansion beyond its initial crypto derivatives business.
According to Reuters, Kalshi is in advanced discussions with regulators to offer perpetual futures on metals, forex, and energy markets, with plans to eventually cover broad market indices and individual stocks. Unlike conventional futures, perpetual futures do not expire, allowing traders to hold positions indefinitely.
Kalshi’s Chief Risk Officer, Udesh Jha, stated that market demand is shaping priorities, with gold emerging as a strong candidate due to its appeal to both retail and institutional investors. He also noted that foreign exchange, metals, and energy remain attractive amid geopolitical developments and seasonal trends.
Kalshi has already made a mark in crypto perpetual futures, becoming one of the first regulated US platforms to offer such products, which have generated roughly $16.1 billion in trading volume. The company’s expansion into traditional assets places it in direct competition with Robinhood, which recently introduced multi-asset perpetual futures on Bitstamp and is reportedly working toward launching similar products in the US, pending regulatory clearances.
If both firms receive the necessary approvals, competition in regulated perpetual futures could intensify. Kalshi’s focus on gold, forex, and energy highlights its attention to assets that typically attract strong trading during economic uncertainty.
