Corporate Bitcoin Holder Empery Digital Sells $87M in BTC, Joining Growing Trend

Importance High

Empery Digital has sold 1,400 Bitcoin (BTC) for approximately $87 million, joining a growing list of corporate Bitcoin holders monetizing their reserves amid ongoing market pressure.

In a Form 8-K filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Empery disclosed that it sold the units between May 7 and July 10 at an average price of roughly $62,200 per bitcoin. The sale reduced its crypto reserve by nearly half: the firm now holds 1,514 BTC (down from 2,914) along with nearly $74 million in cash.

The company emphasized that the move does not signal a complete withdrawal from Bitcoin. The proceeds will support several corporate priorities, including debt repayment, operational expenses, legal costs, and expansion into artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.

Empery used $10 million to repay part of its outstanding debt on July 7, leaving $45 million under its debt facility. Additional funds will go toward ongoing operations and high legal expenses related to stockholder litigation. A substantial portion of the new cash will help finance a previously announced property acquisition. The firm also agreed to invest $65 million for a 25% stake in a Hunt Properties-managed entity that is acquiring and redeveloping a power-intensive industrial facility in the U.S., as part of its AI infrastructure expansion.

Despite the sale, Empery Digital’s stock (EMPD) rose over 1.5% on Friday following the news.

Empery is not alone in reducing its Bitcoin holdings. The largest corporate Bitcoin holder, Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), made two sales in recent months: a minor sale of 32 units and a larger disposition of 3,588 BTC announced earlier this week. Miners also sold more Bitcoin in the first quarter of this year than in all of 2025, with over 32,000 BTC liquidated—the largest quarterly sell-off on record.

Analysts remain divided on whether this trend is net negative for Bitcoin or represents strategic repositioning by corporate holders. The sales come during a period of market distress, but some firms are using the proceeds to pivot into other growth areas, such as AI, while maintaining significant Bitcoin reserves.
