Bitcoin Price Surges as US CPI for June Falls Below Expectations

Importance High

Bitcoin’s price reacted positively to the release of the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) for June, which came in below expectations. The month-over-month drop was 0.4%, breaking a three-month streak of increases. The annual figure was 3.5%, lower than the anticipated 4%. BTC surged nearly $1,000 to briefly reach $63,500 before retreating slightly.

However, a closer look at the data reveals a mixed picture. A significant portion of the CPI decline was driven by a drop in oil prices in June, attributed to a temporary ceasefire between the US and Iran. The core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, remained unchanged. Moreover, the ceasefire ended last week, and tensions have escalated, causing oil prices to rise again. This suggests that July’s data could see a rebound.

Traders are closely monitoring the situation as it may influence the upcoming Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting. Analysts had warned that a CPI reading above 4% year-over-year could lead to further monetary tightening, negatively impacting Bitcoin. The actual 3.5% figure, however, may have the opposite effect, potentially easing rate hike fears.

Bitcoin’s initial surge was strong, but volatility is expected as the market adjusts to the news and anticipates the next FOMC decision.
