XRP Enters AI Agent Payments Push as Ripple Joins x402 Foundation

Ripple has joined the x402 Foundation as a Premier Member, placing XRP and RLUSD within an industry effort to develop internet-native payments for AI agents, APIs, and applications. The Linux Foundation-backed initiative launched with 40 members focused on creating an open payment standard for automated commerce.

Ripple announced on July 14, 2026, that it joined the x402 Foundation as a Premier Member, giving the company a role in the protocol’s technical and governance development. The foundation operates under the Linux Foundation to support an open, vendor-neutral standard for payments over HTTP. Ripple’s membership connects the XRP Ledger’s x402 support to a broader industry effort focused on AI-driven payment infrastructure.

The x402 Foundation launched with 40 members across finance, cloud infrastructure, payments, and blockchain sectors. Premier Members include Adyen, Amazon Web Services, American Express, Circle, Cloudflare, Coinbase, Fiserv, Google, Mastercard, Monad Foundation, Moonpay, Ripple, Shopify, Solana Foundation, Stellar Development Foundation, Stripe, and Visa. General members include Aleo, Fireblocks, Galaxia Moneytree, Hecto Financial, Injective, Kakaopay, Kite AI, Layerzero Labs, Merit Systems, NEAR Foundation, Orthogonal, Polygon Labs, Quant Network, SKALE, t54 labs, Utexo, World Liberty Financial, and zerohash. Associate Members include BSV Association, Cardano Foundation, Casper, Japanese Contents Blockchain Initiative, and OMA3.

The x402 protocol was contributed by Coinbase to the Linux Foundation as an open standard for internet-native payments. It allows AI agents, APIs, and applications to send and receive payments directly through web interactions. The protocol supports multiple payment methods, including traditional cards, stablecoins, and blockchain-based assets. XRP and RLUSD already support x402 transactions, but broader adoption depends on integrations, usage, and ecosystem development.

Markus Infanger, senior vice president of RippleX, said, “We’ve been building the tools and infrastructure needed to support that future on the XRP Ledger, including support for x402 that enables agents to transact using XRP and RLUSD today.” Linux Foundation CEO Jim Zemlin added, “The operational launch of the x402 Foundation marks a vital milestone in establishing an open, community-governed standard for payments over HTTP.”

Ripple’s membership gives the company a role in developing standards for machine-to-machine payments, while XRP and RLUSD already have support within the x402 framework. However, x402 supports multiple payment methods, meaning XRP will operate alongside traditional payment systems, stablecoins, and other blockchain networks. Future adoption will depend on developers, businesses, and AI platforms integrating x402 into real-world applications.
