White House Touts 'Trump Coin' as TRUMP Memecoin Holders Sit on $3.81 Billion in Losses

Importance High

The White House posted a nine-second video on Wednesday showcasing a new $1 physical commemorative coin called “Trump Coin,” designed to honor the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. The announcement briefly rattled the market for the TRUMP memecoin, a Solana-based token launched in January 2025, due to the shared name.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent unveiled the gold-finish coin, which the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts approved in March 2026. The U.S. Mint plans to strike the coin in Philadelphia ahead of a fall release. Despite its appearance, the coin is made of non-precious metals. Federal law generally prohibits living presidents from appearing on currency, but a 2020 statute allowing anniversary-themed designs enabled this release.

Almost immediately, traders confused the physical coin with the TRUMP memecoin, causing the token to dip briefly from $1.59 to $1.56 before stabilizing. The memecoin has fallen over 97% from its January 2025 peak, with a market cap near $370 million. Onchain data shows that nearly 989,000 of the 1.48 million wallets holding TRUMP are sitting on combined losses of $3.81 billion.

Of the 1 billion TRUMP supply, only 200 million tokens are in public circulation, while insiders and Trump-affiliated entities control the remaining 800 million. Trading fees and royalties from the project generated over $635 million for Trump-linked entities in 2025 alone.

The video has renewed scrutiny of the president’s crypto earnings. Trump’s latest financial disclosure reported at least $1.4 billion in 2025 crypto income, led by memecoin royalties. This prompted a U.S. senator to propose a ban on memecoins for presidents and elected officials, and ethics provisions remain a sticking point in Senate negotiations on crypto market structure.

The White House post drew mixed reactions online, with some users questioning whether the physical coin raises similar conflict-of-interest concerns as the token. The administration maintains the commemorative piece is a Treasury initiative unrelated to the president’s private crypto ventures. The Mint’s collectible will have a $1 face value and be available this fall, while the majority of TRUMP token holders remain underwater.
