XRP Ledger Hits 1 Million AI Agent Transactions as Ripple Builds AI Spending Infrastructure
The XRP Ledger (XRPL) has recorded more than 1 million transactions attributed to AI agents, according to J. Ayo Akinyele, RippleX’s head of engineering. The milestone highlights increased experimentation with software capable of initiating blockchain transactions and paying for digital services without manual approval for each purchase.
Akinyele compared the current state of agentic payments to the early days of cloud infrastructure, noting that the potential is clear but tooling and standards are still developing. As AI agents become more capable, they will need payment infrastructure as seamless as the way they exchange data. Ripple believes the XRP Ledger is built to provide that.
Ripple has introduced an XRPL AI Starter Kit, giving developers tools to connect AI agents to wallets, documentation, and payment functions. The kit supports XRP and Ripple’s dollar-backed RLUSD stablecoin, enabling agents to make payments, use escrow, and complete cross-currency transactions. A key feature is support for x402, an open protocol built around the internet’s “402 Payment Required” response. Ripple has joined the Linux Foundation-backed x402 Foundation to create common payment standards for AI agents, APIs, and applications.
Under the protocol, an online service can send an AI agent a price and payment instructions. The agent submits an onchain payment, receives verification, and retries its request to access the service without opening a billing account or entering card details.
XRPL’s x402 implementation can deliver a confirmed payment result in roughly three to five seconds. This deterministic finality is important because software must know whether a transaction succeeded before proceeding. Developers can use XRPL’s agent tracking tools, including SourceTags, transaction memos, and WebSocket monitoring, to distinguish agent activity from human transactions, audit spending, and respond to unusual behavior.
Ripple is also participating in Mastercard’s AI payments initiative, exploring how autonomous systems can settle invoices, purchase computing resources, and make other machine-to-machine payments within preset permissions.
While crossing 1 million agentic transactions is an exciting milestone, Akinyele noted that the industry is still in the early stages. Commercial volume, unique users, and security controls will determine whether this represents lasting adoption.
