Abu Dhabi's $430B Asset Giant Makes Blockchain Leap, Coinbase Buys In

Importance Critical

Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala Capital, the alternative asset management arm of Mubadala Investment Company overseeing roughly $430 billion in assets, has tokenized one of its private market strategies onto public blockchains. Coinbase has invested its own capital in the fund.

The product is the Mubadala Capital Alternative Solutions Fund, an evergreen strategy focused on private equity, direct investments, and credit. It now runs on Coinbase’s Base network, Solana, and Sui, with additional share classes on Ethereum, Avalanche, Polygon, and Sei. Access is restricted to qualified institutional and accredited investors, with a minimum investment of about $100,000.

UAE-based infrastructure provider KAIO handles issuance and administration. KAIO’s platform now supports roughly $144 million in tokenized funds overall, with prior work for Hamilton Lane, Brevan Howard, BlackRock, and Laser Digital. In April 2026, Tether led an $8 million funding round for KAIO.

Coinbase’s balance sheet stake—undisclosed in size—is a rare case of a publicly traded crypto exchange allocating corporate capital to a tokenized private markets product. Brett Tejpaul, head of Coinbase Institutional, emphasized that regulated assets becoming programmable can integrate into a broader onchain economy.

The fund went live around late June 2026, with onchain assets reaching approximately $75 million as of July 23, 2026. Mubadala and KAIO first announced the partnership in December 2025.

Tokenization is gaining traction among traditional managers such as BlackRock, Franklin Templeton, and Apollo. Citi projects tokenized securities could reach roughly $5.5 trillion by 2030. For Mubadala, the move extends its deal flow to a new investor base while maintaining institutional oversight. For Coinbase, the investment signals confidence in the asset class it is helping build infrastructure for. Adoption by other sovereign wealth managers will depend on the fund’s performance and regulatory responses.
