Sam Altman’s World Foundation Pulls $52.5M as Pantera Backs Global World ID Expansion
The World Foundation has raised $52.5 million in a strategic sale of its WLD tokens, the organization announced on July 24. The funding round, structured with a one-year token lockup, was led by venture capital firm Pantera Capital. Other participants included Bain Capital Crypto, Eightco Holdings, Selini Capital, and Susquehanna Crypto.
The capital will support the global deployment of World ID, the foundation’s digital identity verification infrastructure. World ID is designed to address the growing threats of AI-generated deepfakes, synthetic media, and automated bot traffic. The technology allows users to verify their humanity through a physical device called an Orb, which performs a one-time biometric check and generates a zero-knowledge cryptographic proof stored on the user’s device.
Cosmo Jiang, general partner at Pantera Capital, said: ‘The need for Proof of Human is becoming acutely clear with the acceleration of AI development, and we see this in the influx of enterprise traction.’ Tom Lee, a board member of Eightco Holdings, added that verified digital credentials will serve as foundational security tools as automated technologies proliferate online.
World ID is already integrated into major platforms such as Zoom, DocuSign, Okta, Vercel, and Tinder. According to the foundation, over 39 million individuals have registered on the World Network, with more than 18 million completing Orb verification. The network has processed over 475 million identity proofs since launching in July 2023.
The announcement coincides with the third anniversary of World’s network launch (the project was originally co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman). The foundation also indicated that adoption is expected to accelerate with the upcoming release of World ID 4.0, an enterprise-grade update designed to support large-scale integrations and enable third-party developers to create custom zero-knowledge credentials.
