Pantera Capital Leads $52.5 Million World Foundation Raise as AI Identity Race Accelerates

Importance High

World Foundation, the nonprofit behind the World protocol co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, raised $52.5 million through a locked sale of its WLD token on July 24, 2026. Pantera Capital led the round, with participation from Bain Capital Crypto, Eightco Holdings, Selini Capital, and Susquehanna Crypto. The tokens are subject to a 12-month lockup and were purchased directly at market price, with no public exchange sales.

The funds will be used to expand World ID for businesses, individual users, and AI agents, shifting focus from network building to integration into existing platforms. The tokens carry no equity or ownership in Tools for Humanity, the for-profit company behind the project’s hardware and software.

Onchain data suggests the sale involved approximately 217 million WLD at around $0.24 per token, a discount to the market price of roughly $0.37 at the time. The foundation described the deal as market-priced.

This raise follows a $135 million private sale in May 2025, bringing cumulative capital raised to nearly $492.5 million. Eightco Holdings, which already holds about 283 million WLD tokens, participated in the round. Pantera Capital General Partner Cosmo Jiang linked the investment to the rise of AI, emphasizing the need for proof of human verification.

World ID uses physical Orb devices to scan irises, converting data into a code stored on the user’s phone. Apps can verify identity without revealing personal information. World ID 4.0, released this year, supports enterprise deployments and developer-built credentials using zero-knowledge proofs. Companies like Zoom, Docusign, Okta, Vercel, and Tinder have integrated or announced integrations.

Over 39 million people have joined the World Network, with more than 18 million completing Orb verification and 475 million World ID proofs processed since launch. The network has grown from 26 million users and 12.5 million verified humans in May 2025.

However, the project faces regulatory scrutiny in multiple countries, including Spain, Kenya, Brazil, Indonesia, South Korea, Hong Kong, and the Philippines, over biometric data collection and consent. In São Paulo, prosecutors filed a lawsuit seeking to block paid biometric collection, delete data, and impose R$240 million in damages, alleging Tools for Humanity collected iris scans from over 400,000 people, often in low-income areas, despite regulatory orders to stop incentives.

World Foundation, an independent nonprofit based in the Cayman Islands, aims for long-term sustainability through protocol fees from applications. The July 24 announcement coincided with a 43% drop in WLD’s daily emission rate, reducing near-term supply pressure. WLD was trading near $0.33 with a market cap of about $1.3 billion on July 26, 2026. The project’s success depends on enterprise adoption, regulatory outcomes, and developer engagement with World ID 4.0.
