Michael Saylor Says Bitcoin Can Grow 100-Fold, Warns Rule Changes Could Threaten Its Future

Importance High

Michael Saylor, Executive Chairman of Strategy Inc. (Nasdaq: MSTR), has warned that Bitcoin’s greatest challenge may come from internal governance disputes as the network matures into a potential foundation for global capital markets.

In a series of posts on X on July 28, Saylor argued that while Bitcoin has achieved widespread adoption, it now faces pressure over the rules that define its economic system. He cautioned that groups could “invent pretexts, rewrite the rules, and seize economic rights” if they gain influence over Bitcoin’s governance process.

Saylor described Bitcoin’s consensus rules as its constitution, stating that they “define property, scarcity, settlement, and power.” He warned that changing this framework to benefit any specific faction could affect the broader ecosystem and the rights of participants. He cited BIP-110, covenant-related features, and larger block proposals as examples of changes that could create risks for Bitcoin’s ecosystem.

“A single corrupt rule adopted today could rob future generations of markets not yet built, technologies not yet imagined, and economic freedom not yet won,” Saylor wrote.

He also connected protocol decisions to Bitcoin’s long-term security model, noting that the declining block subsidy makes transaction fees increasingly important for miner incentives. “Miners put capital at risk to secure Bitcoin. Their subsidy halves every 210,000 blocks, so fees must carry more of the security burden,” he remarked.

Saylor emphasized that governance decisions also affect exchanges, custodians, applications, investors, and companies holding Bitcoin. He warned that allowing political influence to determine consensus changes could lead to “protocol warfare” that pushes away capital, slows innovation, weakens security, and prevents Bitcoin from reaching its full potential.

Despite these risks, Saylor maintained that Bitcoin could grow 100-fold and become the foundation of global capital, provided its core rules remain neutral and predictable.
