Iran Launches 'Surprise Attack' on US Base in Jordan as Oil Jumps Almost 4% Putting Bitcoin's Rally to the Test

Importance High

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched multiple ballistic missiles at U.S. forces in Jordan on July 28, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed. All missiles were intercepted by Patriot air-defense batteries, and no casualties were reported. The attack marked the first Iranian ballistic missile strike on a U.S. base in the region since President Trump paused offensive strikes against Iran days earlier to allow diplomacy.

Financial markets reacted swiftly: West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude jumped 3.95% to $83.08 a barrel, and Brent crude rose 3.86% to $87.34. U.S. equity futures also edged higher, with Dow Jones futures up 63 points. The move partially reversed an earlier oil price decline triggered by the previous ceasefire signals.

Bitcoin, which had recovered to around $65,200 during the calm, slipped toward $63,700 after the strike before recovering to $64,500. The cryptocurrency has shown some signs of decoupling from pure risk-asset behavior during the conflict, holding support even as oil and equities swung sharply. However, the July 28 attack is the most direct challenge yet to the ceasefire narrative that had underpinned the past week’s calm.
