CEO Arrested Over Alleged Crypto-Funded Contract Killing
The U.S. Department of Justice announced the arrest of Marcos Arturo Kleiman Tronllan, CEO of Moneyflip LLC, on July 30 over an alleged murder-for-hire plot. According to a criminal complaint, Kleiman hired undercover agents posing as hitmen to kidnap and kill a Mexican businessman over an unpaid debt. Moneyflip is a registered money services business offering cross-border currency exchange.
Investigators initially identified Kleiman during an ongoing probe into money exchange businesses near the U.S.-Mexico border. Authorities suspected he used his business to evade Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) reporting requirements and launder drug trafficking proceeds. Court documents allege that in February, Kleiman converted approximately $750,000 in U.S. currency into cryptocurrency and transmitted the funds to an undercover federal agent’s wallet, charging a 10% fee.
Prosecutors further allege Kleiman agreed to pay $40,000 for the kidnapping and murder, delivering two $5,000 cash deposits before agents presented fabricated evidence of the victim’s death. Kleiman then made a final cash payment and transferred 25,000 USDT into an undercover wallet. He faces one count of murder-for-hire, carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
The case underscores how federal anti-money laundering regulations treat cryptocurrency businesses as money transmitters subject to BSA requirements, including registration, customer identification, and suspicious activity reporting. Law enforcement increasingly uses blockchain records to trace crypto transactions linked to violent crime, fraud, and sanctions evasion.
