CZ and Willy Woo Debate: Are Exchanges Safer Than Self-Custody?
Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) ignited a debate on X by citing data from analyst Willy Woo, which suggests that storing cryptocurrency on exchanges may be statistically safer than self-custody.
Woo’s data, from a December 2025 report, indicates that 1.57 million BTC has been lost from self-custody wallets, compared to 1.51 million BTC from exchanges. However, this data does not account for recent hacks or incidents, such as the Coldcard compromise, where the value of stolen BTC continues to rise.
CZ argued that exchange hack data is easier to collect since such incidents become major news, whereas self-custody losses are often underreported. He noted that some exchanges have collapsed, skewing the stats, while Binance and others have always covered user losses from centralized exchange hacks.
CZ concluded that a balanced approach—splitting holdings across multiple custodians—is “probably best.”
