Apple Pulls Telegram After Illegal Content Appears in Public Group
Apple temporarily removed Telegram from the iOS App Store after prohibited content surfaced in a public group, CEO Pavel Durov revealed on August 4. Durov attributed the removal to an extortion campaign targeting community owners who refused ransom demands.
According to Durov, an attacker inserted AI-modified illegal pornography into an older message within an active group. The backdated edit concealed the material from most participants, limiting opportunities for users to flag and report it through Telegram’s moderation channels. The extortionists then reported the content directly to Apple, triggering the removal.
Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines require services hosting user-generated content to filter objectionable material, provide reporting tools, block abusive users, and publish accessible contact information. The guidelines also permit removal without notice when applications become primarily associated with prohibited activities such as pornography or abuse.
Durov noted that Apple removed Telegram before contacting the company, calling it an overreaction manipulated by extortionists. Telegram restored its availability within hours, but the incident highlighted vulnerabilities in platforms that rely on user reporting and manual review.
Telegram has faced previous App Store restrictions, including Durov’s claims that Apple limited updates following pressure from Russian authorities. The company also experienced a temporary suspension of its t.me domain, which disrupted public links globally. Indian authorities have additionally scrutinized Telegram’s username features amid concerns about impersonation and fraud.
Durov urged developers and community administrators to prepare for increasingly coordinated reporting attacks. The next challenge for Telegram involves identifying concealed edits rapidly enough to prevent planted material from reaching external reviewers before moderators can remove it.
