Bitcoin Bridge Halts All Swaps Indefinitely After AI Tools Outpace Security Fixes

Importance High

Boltz, a non-custodial Bitcoin bridge that connects Bitcoin’s main chain with the Lightning Network and Liquid sidechain, has suspended its swap services indefinitely. The decision follows months of AI-assisted exploits that the small team could no longer keep up with.

In an update, Boltz explained that while no single incident triggered the shutdown, the pattern of automated, AI-assisted probing and repeated exploits made it impossible to continue safely. “Attackers now iterate faster than a team our size can find and patch,” the team said, noting a drastic acceleration in recent days. “We cannot responsibly re-enable Boltz swaps, especially as we are being actively targeted by what appear to be multiple resourceful groups while we race to deploy fixes.”

The platform emphasized that no user funds were at risk, as Boltz is non-custodial by design. The losses were absorbed by the company itself.

Boltz also warned that AI-assisted attacks represent a growing threat for Bitcoin services built on open-source software. “This is a major paradigm shift for Bitcoin services operating on an open source stack,” the team stated, adding that there is no timeline for resuming operations.

The API remains available for cooperative refunds, and unilateral refunds work independently of their infrastructure. Support is still reachable.
