Bitcoin Options Flash $80K Max Pain as Wall Street Loads Up

Importance High

Bitcoin traders have quietly stacked more than $41 billion into futures contracts, while the options market is flashing price targets thousands of dollars above where bitcoin actually trades. At $64,711 on Aug. 5, spot bitcoin looks almost cheap compared with the bets piling up across the derivatives market.

Binance controls the largest share of bitcoin futures open interest, with 148,500 BTC worth $9.61 billion in outstanding contracts. CME ranks second at 102,840 BTC ($6.66 billion) after posting a 6.82% jump in just one day, signaling a return of institutional capital. The total futures open interest across exchanges has recovered to about $43 billion, up from lows but still well below the $90 billion seen in late 2025.

The three-month annualized basis, the premium futures trade above spot, has climbed to roughly 4.3% across Binance, Deribit and OKX, a sharp recovery from near 0.3% in late April. This shows improving trader confidence without reaching overheated bull market levels.

In the options market, call contracts outnumber puts 62-38 in open interest, but fresh positioning over the past 24 hours shows nearly equal volume, indicating hesitation from new capital. Total bitcoin options open interest has recovered toward $36 billion, though CME’s options notional value has fallen sharply to about $50 million.

Max pain, the price where the greatest value of options expires worthless, points consistently above spot. OKX shows September and December max pain near $69,000, Binance approaches $80,000 around December, and Deribit shows peaks near $69,700. All major venues point above bitcoin’s current price.

Liquidations continue to punish excessive leverage. Binance longs lost roughly $70 million on July 6 and another $65 million on July 14, while shorts saw $30-$40 million erased on July 9-10. By Aug. 1, another $50 million in long positions disappeared. The next CME expiries will reveal whether max pain climbs further and whether the futures basis stays above 4%.
