Crypto Holders Lost Over $30M in Violent 'Wrench Attacks' in 2026, Chainalysis Reports

Importance High

Criminals stole more than $30 million from cryptocurrency holders through violence in the first half of 2026, blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis reported on Thursday, putting the year on pace to break 2025’s record of $58 million.

These crimes fall under a category security researchers call ‘wrench attacks,’ a term derived from the notion that physical threats can bypass any digital security. The attacks involve home invasions, kidnappings, and hostage situations targeting crypto holders.

Chainalysis noted that France has become the center of this shift. The country logged 30 publicly known violent incidents through mid-2026, up from just 19 for all of last year. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez indicated in June that authorities have documented over 70 crypto-related violent incidents, a figure exceeding the public count. He announced plans for a rapid alert system to protect individuals in the crypto industry.

The surge in France is linked to a data breach where a tax official allegedly stole and sold files on wealthy crypto holders, including names, addresses, and account holdings. A second breach at crypto tax firm Waltio in January exposed roughly 50,000 more user records.

Not all attacks succeed. Chainalysis reported that only 26% of violent theft attempts through late June resulted in a payout, down from 49% in 2025 and 67% in 2024. The falling success rate is attributed to France, where attacks are more numerous and less targeted.

The nature of attacks is changing globally. Home invasions now make up 37% of documented incidents in 2026, up from 26% in 2023. Kidnappings have grown from 39% of cases in 2023 to 52%. Attackers increasingly target family members or associates, with this tactic appearing in over 40% of cases in France.

Once attacks succeed, stolen funds are moved through centralized exchanges, decentralized exchanges, or laundering networks tied to organized crime. French authorities have made around 200 arrests and filed 88 indictments through the anti-organized-crime unit JUNALCO, with 75 suspects in pretrial detention.

Chainalysis advises crypto holders to avoid publicizing large holdings, keep custody arrangements private, and treat data breaches as security risks.
