BIP-110 Splits Bitcoin as Rival Miners Clash at Block 961632

Importance High

Onchain data confirms that the BIP-110 activation period is live, and Bitcoin’s blockchain has split into two versions. At block 961632, mining heavyweight Antpool produced one block while BIP-110 supporter Roughnecks mined a rival version, according to monitoring sites such as forkwatch.tv and fork.observer.

The split occurred exactly at a difficulty adjustment, with mining difficulty climbing 0.99% at block 961632. Mempool.space data shows Antpool mined the block on the main chain, while a clone mempool shows Roughnecks mining a competing version. Fork.observer indicates Roughnecks connected with Ocean Pool.

Bitcoin’s main chain has since advanced past block 961634, with subsequent blocks mined by F2pool and Simple Mining. BIP-110 supporters LukeDashjr and Bitcoin Mechanic expressed displeasure on social media, calling Antpool’s block an attack or invalid. BIP-110 creator Dathon Ohm congratulated Roughnecks for mining the first BIP-110-compliant block.

As of 4:35 p.m. EDT, the BIP-110 side of the split remains frozen at block 961632. Given the limited hashrate backing the fork, finding the next block could take considerably longer—potentially days—unless supporters decide to alter the proof-of-work after block 961632. This story is still developing.
