Major XRP Ledger Upgrade Targets Institutional Adoption But There's a Catch
The XRP Ledger (XRPL) has released version 3.3.0, a major upgrade aimed at positioning the network as a key infrastructure for institutional tokenization. The update introduces several proposed amendments focused on privacy, payments, and real-world asset (RWA) management.
Confidential Transfers, the most notable feature, allows institutions to hide balances and transaction amounts for Multi-Purpose Tokens (MPTs) while keeping accounts and asset types visible. This uses cryptographic proofs to verify validity without exposing sensitive financial data. According to a GitHub post, this addresses a key obstacle for financial institutions seeking the transparency and settlement benefits of public blockchains without revealing position sizes or transaction values.
Data from RWA.xyz shows that of the $1.38 billion in RWAs distributed on XRPL, roughly $850 million comes from Ripple’s own stablecoin, RLUSD, leaving about $530 million from other issuers like Ondo, Archax, and Societe Generale.
Other amendments include Batch, which groups up to eight transactions into a single atomic unit for complex settlements, swaps, and institutional transactions. Sponsor allows one account to cover another user’s transaction fees and reserve requirements, enabling companies to onboard customers without requiring them to purchase XRP upfront. Permission Delegation lets account holders grant predefined transaction permissions to another party without surrendering full wallet control, aligning with Dynamic MPTs to allow issuers to modify certain token characteristics post-issuance.
These amendments are not yet live on the XRP Ledger Mainnet. The governance process requires each to maintain support from at least 80% of trusted validators for two consecutive weeks before activation. This cautious approach ensures network consensus but delays immediate implementation.
